Learn Fresh is partnering with the Shelden Williams Foundation to launch NBA Math Hoops in Atlanta Public Schools! Programming for the 2021-22 NBA Math Hoops season will kick off with a free virtual educator training for APS educators on November 9th at 3:30 PM.
NBA Math Hoops, Learn Fresh’s flagship program, is a comprehensive community education program for students in grades 3-8 that strives to build fundamental math and social-emotional skills through the game of basketball. The free program features a digital and physical board game, mobile app, curriculum, and community experience delivered to students in classroom and out-of-school time learning environments, with an explicit focus on serving low-income students and students of color in communities across the U.S. and abroad.
The program is built around the physical and digital NBA Math Hoops games, which feature the real-life performance statistics and identities of all NBA and WNBA players. Students draft a team of NBA and WNBA players, and compete with their classmates to solve math problems using player statistics, building fluency with fundamental math skills and core social-emotional competencies such as sportsmanship and grit. The core game is fun and challenging, and the program provides opportunities for inspiring in-person and virtual community events that bring the learning to life and expose students to STEM careers.
The Shelden Williams Foundation is dedicated to empowering student athletes and their families by delivering and supporting initiatives that promote emotional and physical health through sports, education, and community involvement. As part of the partnership with Learn Fresh, the Foundation will be sponsoring NBA Math Hoops programming in Atlanta Public Schools for the 2021-22 season. Learn Fresh’s mission—to leverage sports and entertainment to power students’ STEM and social-emotional learning through community, play, and rigorous exploration—offers a natural complement to the Foundation’s purpose.
APS educators who are interested in bringing the program to their in-school or out-of-school time learning environment are encouraged to attend the virtual educator training session on November 9th. All attendees will be equipped with the skills to implement the full program with students in their learning environment. The training and program are free to all APS educators.
